The 15 most Influential Women IWD 2023: TOP SOCIAL WORKER

Talk us through your background and your journey as India’s top social worker? Tell us all about your work?
Mrs Poonam Wadhawan was born and raised in a joint family. She lived with her grandparents, her uncles, and her aunts. She grew up amidst a very strict family who would threaten that she’d get married if she did not study well. This was her primary motivation to put effort into her academics. However, she was married off in her final year of college to an Army officer. Being born in a strict environment, she did not have a lot of freedom. So, after marriage, wherever an opportunity presented itself, she took it. She worked as the Principal of a Primary School for two years. She was always a social worker. She taught the wives of the jawans various skills that allowed them to be self-sufficient and helped them earn a little money. She taught them how to make candles, greeting cards, envelopes and so on. She also taught them how to read and write, as well as different culinary skills.

Mrs Poonam says that she got the helping nature from her father, because as a child, she always saw her father helping everyone he possibly could. She has worked with various organisations dealing with drug addicts, cancer patients and children with special needs. She says that during this time of helping, she was given the opportunity to study tarot cards, numerology, crystal healing and Reiki. She has also attended a course on marriage consultancy and has counselled many couples during the pandemic. She says that the only reason she was able to accomplish all of this was because she has the desire to share and assist others in any way that she was able to.

If you had to start over, would you choose this as your profession or another and why?

Mrs Poonam says that if given an option, she would choose her current profession itself as helping someone without any selfish interest gives her a lot of happiness.

How do you do justice to this title?
All her life, Mrs Poonam was a good daughter, listening to her father’s wise guidance. Growing up, she has worked with drug addicts, cancer patients, special children and in old age homes. She has done a lot of social work. She says that the combination of all such experiences makes very capable of helping people in the right way, and thus, she feels she is doing justice to her job.

Tell us about the uniqueness of your brand/talent/style ?
Mrs Poonam says that somehow, since the age of 26 years old, she’s been consciously and unconsciously helping people. And that was something she found unique. She has been meditating from an early age and feels that somehow, every time she meets a new person, she feels as though God himself directed her to that place.

Tell us about your social initiatives?
Mrs Poonam is a very outgoing person and thus, teaching came very easily to her. She launched her own decks of cards with aim at having a positive difference in our lives. One of these decks are daily guidance cards who have the power to heal one’s chakras daily. The user is also equipped with the power to receive prompts from the universe as to what they should and what they should not do. Her second deck is Reiki energy cards which have various uses – healing oneself, protecting one’s self, de-stress, to attract self-love, for abundance and prosperity, and for success and peace. She made these two decks with the aim of helping people who suffered around her.

What is your success mantra that you have embraced as you sought to establish your success story?
Mrs Poonam says that her success mantra is helping people selflessly, being compassionate and full of love will attract good vibes and success. She says that the abundance of happiness and joy must be shared with others, and that by helping others, you yourself will feel a lot of happiness and content.
