One of the questions I was asked for this piece read- “If you had to start over, would you choose this as your profession or would you choose another profession?” The answer, today, is a resounding YES! But it was not even on my radar when I was actually starting over 3 decades ago. Homoeopathy happened to me by chance, or by elimination of options, rather than deliberate selection. Medicine was the default career path to pursue, if you were a woman in the 90s. I did not make the cut for MBBS when I appeared for CPMT, the common medical test at the time. I was sure that I did not want to become a dentist by pursuing BDS, the next best option per merit. I did not know anything about homoeopathy at that time, but the fact that it would make me a doctor at the end of the 6 year course was enough for me to take a punt on it, albeit reluctantly! Little did I know that I had found the love of my life! The next half a decade was a wonderful phase of discovering this fascinating alternate school of medicine, a science that approaches medicine and treatment with gentleness, care, and empathy. I studied BHMS at one of the best colleges of homoeopathy in the country, and the best one in the state of UP, National Homoeopathic Medical College in Lucknow. I was a consistent top-performer, topped my college and finished the course as a proud gold medalist. By the time I finished my internship, I knew I had found my life’s passion.

I also feel fortunate and privileged at having found great gurus and mentors while interning in Lucknow, who shaped my early career. In my initial years in Lucknow, I practised under the keen eye and guidance of Dr. A.P.Arora, who was a celebrated stalwart of homoeopathy and had played a crucial role in establishing it in the country at a time when it was relatively unknown as a form of medicine. His legacy was continued by his son, Dr. Naresh Arora, who is also a respected and renowned doctor of Lucknow. After Dr.A.P.Arora retired, I continued to work alongside Dr.Naresh Arora and gained valuable knowledge and experience before starting my own independent practice. I consider him my guru, and owe my success to him. The unconventional path that had begun with the choice of homoeopathy did not end with it. At a time when start-ups and entrepreneurship were neither a buzzword nor a norm, I set up my own homoeopathic medicines and drugs manufacturing unit in Lucknow with a small loan from my father, and a senior doctor as a business partner. I entered the new millennium with a shared legacy clinic, a mushrooming private practice, and a new manufacturing business. Our diligence and ethics brought success- we were known for our authentic medicines, and were the unopposed government suppliers for the entire state of UP for almost a decade, until we decided to move away from the business. This also meant flouting more conventions- while young millennial women of today take pride in wading through their 30s as single women, choosing to invest in their careers instead of ‘settling down’, I chose prioritising my career over marriage at a time when there were no precedents, and more importantly no blueprint for it. When I finally took the familial plunge, I had built enough professional capital, experience, stature and confidence to uproot myself and start anew in a completely new city. Today, I have a successful practice in Gurgaon, with patients from across the globe. With almost 25 years of serving humanity, and more than a decade long practice in Gurgaon, our medicines are regularly dispatched to 14 countries, and counting!

Tell us about the uniqueness of your style?

Homoeopathy, or medicine, to me is not a business. I love what I do and truly feel it is the best profession and a means to serve humanity. Replacing pain with smiles, and long-unresolved problems and ailments with unexpected solutions and delighting my patients gives me the biggest satisfaction and high. This is where I also feel the biggest power of this pathy lies. A myth that shrouds homoeopathy is that it is a slow mode of treatment. I am glad that more and more people are gravitating towards homoeopathy today, discovering its power, and busting this unfortunate myth. It is true that in chronic cases, it may take some time, but that is also true with any other pathy- healing and treatment takes time when the problem is complex. But in acute cases, be it diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, viral cold and cough etc, it leads to results in no time!  Moreover, people often find solutions in homoeopathy when they have tried and exhausted all other conventional routes. In many cases wherein surgery is inevitable, Homoeopathy can safely resolve the problem averting the surgery. For example, though these may sound a little technical to lay readers, cases like hypertrophied adenoids and tonsils can be safely treated in children without any surgical intervention. Most Ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids can be managed and dissolved with Homoeopathy. Acute appendicitis can also be treated without going for surgery. A lot of other ailments and problems can only be suppressed, not cured by western medicine, but most people will be surprised to know that homoeopathy has a solution to them. For example, allergies of all kinds, like skin allergies, gastric or respiratory allergies, can be handled very well with homoeopathy, and cured completely over time. There is a vast, untapped potential in homoeopathy that patients lose out on due to lack of knowledge, confidence, or due to myths. They deserve to know about these to be able to treat themselves with care and wholesomeness, even when they have lost hope.

How do you do justice to this title?
Practising homoeopathy means a lot of responsibility. Our job is not to just treat the patient, but to help them understand the problem and the options available to them. Like any medicinal science, it has its own limitations as well. It is important for us as doctors to be honest and forthright with patients and their caregivers, and guide them along the right path of healing, even if it means directing them to other forms of medicine or treatments. Sharing the right information and guidance with patients is very important.

What is your success mantra that you have embraced as you sought to establish your success story?
Being a holistic science, it is important to create a safe space for the patients and their caregivers. Homoeopathy needs a lot of details about a patient’s life in order to individualise and customise the treatment, and deliver holistic healing. This expression of vulnerability creates strong bonds between the patients/caregivers, and the doctor. The confidence and trust it engenders helps with quick recovery and healing on the part of the patient. For me as a homoeopathic doctor, it leads to a sense of gratitude and contentment, at having privileged access into people’s lives and leaving them better than I found them!

One special Quote/message for all communities/brands.
No pathy is complete, be it Allopathy, Homoeopathy or Ayurveda. Time to ascertain your limits and go hand in hand with other schools of medicines.
